City of Trebinje Awarded European City of Sport 2025 Title
In a momentous event for the City of Trebinje, the town was officially awarded the prestigious title of European City of Sport 2025 at a ceremony held in the European Parliament building in Brussels. This recognition, given in the category for cities with populations of up to 50,000, celebrates Trebinje's commitment to promoting sports and enhancing its sports infrastructure.
Mayor Mirko Ćurić, who received the award on behalf of the city, highlighted the significance of this honor as a testament to the collective effort of the entire Trebinje community. “This award is primarily for all citizens of Trebinje, as it represents a joint effort,” said Ćurić. “We are currently allocating substantial funds from our budget, in partnership with other local and national entities, to further develop sports and sports infrastructure in our city.”
Trebinje is home to over forty sports clubs, and more than a third of its population actively participates in sports. Ćurić emphasized that this title is a culmination of ongoing efforts to improve and foster a vibrant sports culture. "This recognition is only the crown of all our efforts so far," he added. He also expressed gratitude to the team that worked on the application for the award and congratulated the citizens of Trebinje for their collective achievement.
The Mayor further encouraged the people of Trebinje to use this recognition as a motivation to continue working towards elevating sports to an even higher level. "I want this to be an incentive for our citizens, but also for ourselves, to continue working for the benefit of Trebinje sports," said Ćurić.
During their trip to Brussels, the Trebinje delegation also visited the Republic of Srpska Representation in Brussels, where they were introduced to the various activities and services provided by the Representation. This visit gave the delegation the opportunity to discuss future possibilities and cooperation, further strengthening the ties between Trebinje and the EU. The Republic of Srpska Representation is always present to support and promote the institutions of the Republic of Srpska, assisting in their efforts to foster greater connections with the European Union.
Trebinje’s application for the European City of Sport 2025 title was significantly supported by the twin municipality of Herceg Novi, which was awarded the same title for 2024. The cooperation between the two cities, headed by Herceg Novi Mayor Stevan Katić, underscores the importance of regional collaboration in advancing sports and tourism initiatives.
Accompanying the Mayor at the ceremony in Brussels were Deputy Mayor Dražen Bošković, Head of the Sports Department at the City Administration Mitar Mrdić, and Secretary General of the Sports Association Leotar Velibor Brnj.
